Animal Hair and Fibres

Animal Hair and Fibres for reinforcing lime renders and plasters.  Animal hair has traditionally been used as reinforcement in lime renders / plasters by improving tensile strength and it also reduces shrinkage cracking. Alkali resistant glass fibres are the modern equivalent, with exceptional chemical resistance, they provide even greater reinforcement for plasters, renders, mortars and screeds.

The use of hair and fibres in renders / plasters is most definitely advised on walls with a lath background, and the addition also allows for application of thicker coats to uneven backgrounds. Please note hair and fibres are not required for the final setting coat (Fine Stuff).

We supply a blend of Goat hair and Fibres or the goat hair separately. As the goat hair is slightly finer and softer, it's often used on it's own in the second coat of lime plaster.
