Selecting the Right Lime Mortar
Selecting the Right Lime Mortar
We manufacture and supply a variety of pre-mixed performance mortars, supplied ready to use. The Lime Mortars come pre-mixed with a range of binders and sands to suit your application needs.
There are three types of ready mixed lime mortar:
- Natural Hydraulic Lime Mortar – The Ironstone range of Dry Premixed Natural Hydraulic Lime Mortars have been manufactured in partnership with Heidelberg Materials using their high-performance NHL 3.5 binders and carefully selected kiln dried sands.
- Hot Lime Mix – Womersley’s hot lime mortars use finely ground quicklime blended with good quality sands in a pan mixer, producing a lime rich and very fatty workable mortar.
- Non-Hydraulic Lime Mortars – Our Non-Hydraulic lime mortars are manufactured on site in Yorkshire from British mature lime putty and selected aggregates. Producing a traditional very fatty and workable mortar.
Natural Hydraulic Lime Mortars
Our Ironstone range of premixed natural hydraulic lime mortars are manufactured with NHL 3.5 binder from Heidelberg Materials Socli and blended with kiln dried sands. The sands are prewashed to remove sediment before being dried.
The Ironstone mortars are natural and highly workable, combining long term
durability with breathability for building and re-pointing. The range has been
developed to ensure a traditional heritage finish and is available in a range of 12
colours with various aggregate sizes as specified - just add water.
Ironstone premixed mortars are batch blended for consistency and naturally coloured from a range of sands to give the desired finish and texture.
Masonry walls built with Ironstone Lime Mortar provide:
- Improved breathability
- Protection of masonry from frost and damp damage
- Long term durability
- Reduced susceptibility to sulphate attack
- Naturally flexibility reducing the chance of cracking
- Environmentally friendly - Lime mortars actively absorb CO2 from the atmosphere.

Hot Lime Mix
Womersley’s manufacture the widest range of Hot Lime Mixed Mortars in the UK. The range is achieved by using a variety of sands and pozzolans blended with Buxton Quicklime. The Hot mixes are made fresh to order. Womersley’s Hot
Lime Mixes are highly regarded within the building conservation industry and were used on the recent restoration of the historic Ribblehead Viaduct. A hot-lime mix is a very vapour permeable mortar, with a good ‘sticky’ consistency.
Hot lime mortars are recognised as been up to twice as breathable as NHL 3.5 Mortar, so are suitable for particularly soft stone and brick. Our full colour range of samples are available to purchase in a convenient sample box.
Non-Hydraulic Lime Mortar
Our Non-Hydraulic lime mortars are manufactured on site in Yorkshire from British
mature lime putty and selected aggregates. Producing a lime rich and very fatty
workable mortar for repointing and rebuilding solid walls. Ideal for the care and
restoration of older buildings and can be used internally or externally.
Non-hydraulic lime mortars have a natural elasticity, which allows them to absorb
minor building movements. They are also up to twice as "breathable" as NHL 3.5
mortar.
Non-Hydraulic Limes have various names such as Fat Lime, Lime Putty, Air Lime.
Non-hydraulic lime mortars set by carbonation which causes a slower set, plus the
mortar remains softer and more breathable.
