Creating Formwork and Constructing an Arch
Womersleys ran a training day, held at the Art Hostel in Leeds, for a group of architects, surveys, DIYers, builders and conservation officers made timber formwork before building a brick and stone arch. The mortar used was a hot lime mix consisting of yellow Sherborne sand, ironstone sand and quick lime. This fatty hot lime mix was ideal for bedding this brick and stonework.
The cut springing and key stones allowed the arch to be constructed more easily and allowed the joints in the brick work to be kept at a more consistent width.
The training days are being provided to Leeds City Council as part of its initiative to promote good conservation practice within the Kirgkate Conservation Area.
